To ALL WST Members:

As you all know, literacy and education, are very important to me. I am an avid reader, and, the idea dawned on me to start a "book club" on this site. I welcome suggestions on how we go about choosing the "book of the month", and I do not think it needs to be all about pan or the steelband. I do believe that we will benefit by reading more, as my view is: AN ILLITERATE PERSON IS NOT SOMEONE WHO CANNOT READ; RATHER, SOMEONE WHO REFUSES TO (READ).

That said, I just started reading ZEN and the ART of MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE - An Inquiry into Values, by Robert M. Pirsig. My son recommended this book, which was one of his high school's required readings. I also recommend reading this book, and I submit it for the first book for the "WST Book Club". I also ask the members to submit book titles, and suggest ways we would go about choosing which books we select.

To be clear, the "idea" came through me, not from me, as ALL others, including the "Bllueprint". When you are genuine about what you do, "God" intervenes and takes over, and ALL the negative, impish comments attacks God's Spirit, and not me personally. I know that, and hopefully, the myopic among us, also come to realize, that we are ALL vessels of "God's Divine Purpose".

With Brotherly and Sisterly Love For You All,

Geoge D. Goddard, B.A. Music

  • BOOK OF THE MONTH FOR AUGUST 2012:  Pedagogy Of The Oppressed by Paulo Freire. (See attached file.)

Okay, this is it folks!!! I think the best way to go about this, is to keep it simple. I decided the way we go about this is by choosing books that we can get online for free (reading and/or downloading). For example, we can use this site: http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/. And we can add others, as we find them. I'm sure we can find many free books online, we would love to read and would recommend.

To keep it fair, we will choose who picks the "Book Of The Month", by order of time of membership. Obviously, that would mean I get "first dibs", and the book I choose is Pedagogy Of The Oppressed by Paulo Freire. Attached is a copy. This will be the book for the month of August (2012), and I think it is appropriate reading during the month of our "freedom" - Trinidad & Tobago's Independence. ( R Kilkenny, you are next on the list, to choose the book for September. Then,  ROLPH DAYAL (October),  Cindy Cummings (November), and Ian (December). If anyone does not submit a book, we just move forward the next person in line. As we get new members, we add them to the line, and when we reach the end of the line, we start over.

Again, please keep in mind, the goal is to enrich our critical thinking skills, and I am aware of the many intellectuals, so please be patient and respectful to those, who may not be as skilled as some of you. The goal is to not make ANYONE feel that their voice is valueless, or what they have to say does not matter. Rather, we should be strengthening each other, and learning from each other. There should be NO personal attacks, and really, I would prefer if we refrain from rebutting others comments/viewpoints. We should just state our own, and explain why we arrived at the conclusions we did. Finally, we should share what we walked away with; what lesson or moral did the book bring out, or how did the book affect you. We can also speak about the style of the author, and if we like, we can do additional research, and share it with the book club members. Finally, I'd like to thank you all, for joining this effort, which I know will only make us stronger, wiser, and more united. Shem Em Hotep (May you go in peace). And read...

  • A MUST READ!!! Hotep, I found this book online, and I think that EVERY WST member needs to read it. It's called Pedagogy Of The Oppressed by Paulo Freire, and it gives some excellent pointers for ANYONE seeking their "freedom". I hope you read it; maybe, if it's okay with you all, we can make this the first book we read, as it is already accessible to everyone. I had to read this book in one of my psychology classes in college, and it really opened my eyes as to what "freedom" is, and what it is not. Hope you enjoy...

  • Follow Up: Thanks again for signing up for the book club. So far we have 16 members, and that is enough to get some great discussions going. Peter, you made a great point; in reference, I think we should choose books that are online and free. That way, we can all have access to them. I was pleasantly surprised to find many books free on the internet, and I will research the best option(s) for us, and get back with you all shortly. I plan on the "launch" being Aug 1st. (Are you all okay with that date?)

Keep in mind, the goal is to improve our analytic and critical thinking skills, and there will be NO wrong points of views. Any questions posed, should be to provoke thought, and not conflict, and the comments should remain philosophical, and not based on religious, political, racial, nationalistic, or cultural biases or opinions. We are not there to merely criticize what the author says, but to analyze, then articulate the authors writing (as to style, voice used, use of language, message, relevance, etc.) and explain what you liked about the book, and what you didn't like. The stories can be based on factual events or fiction, but we all should be able to walk away from every reading as better "thinkers"! That is my goal, for, I truly believe, that we are ALL scholars, in our own right. We simply just do not read enough. By, "we", I mean: WE THE PAN PEOPLE. Shem Em Hotep.

    Ghost.

  • Definately interested in participating. William Johnson wilajo@gmail.com

  • I have responded before, and continue to be quite supportive of the idea.  But I have one small question/query.

Given that most WST members will not have the same books, as in any other book club, how do we share feedback about a particuar book without also sharing the book, or checking it out of a local library.  Very few people are going to buy every book on the recommended list.

    Peter
