I have not seen any response from Cecil and Bede about the WST video featuring Invaders 75th Jouvert Celebrations posted on WST video section.where pans are rolling on the road, individual racks being pulled and push by people having a good time. Are they not aware of this video or they have given up their fight for Pans rolling on the road again.

  • Cecil the best way to move pan without people pushing is float and tractor pulling. Youths have expressed resentment having to walk and play and they are the future, not us. People seem to want them to revert to what suited us. Eh eh,you will hear all yuh old and dat time pass, is we time now, lol.

    • Young people needs leadership but if they could get away with pushing around the leaders they could work with that too. Young people WILL adapt to any environment. Yuh know what, the next thing young people will tell you is they want chairs to sit and play.

    • The problem -- Gerard -- is that you are actively living the PAN LIFE on the ground so you are aware of the CURRENT ISSUES. People on this forum living off MEMORIES which have no bearing in today's reality. So when people like you and Allima and Merrytones come on the forum and "expasiate" the reality is too shocking.

Put the PANS on the floats and leh we done the argument.

      • I want to also highlight another issue. Speak with managers/captains/section leaders of any steel band. After any performance during Panorama ask them about the trials they face in getting the pans and pan racks back to their respective yards. People love to play but when it comes to the task of ensuring that the pans and pan racks get back to the yards safely that's another issue. That task is left to a small number of dedicated pan players and pan lovers. So it is true we on the outside looking in may have different views but those on the inside know just how hard it is. Our roads now will also create challenges because they are no longer flat surfaces. Some roads are ( I am quoting a friend here) like turtle backs, high in the middle and sloping to the sides. So it is difficult to push/roll pans unless as someone suggested you tie the racks together but then again who is going to take the time to do that.

        • Allima Garcia, It is the responsibility every band to have arrangements for the movement  of instruments not depending on supporters, it is not a matter of we on the outside looking in, it's a matter of those in charge knowing what they have to do and doing it.

No one said that pans rolling will be problem free, you just have to have people to deal with them. The reason for most problems comes from the wheels on stands being too small, now we must understand that bands are using the same stands from the 60s, there is also the matter of a hard ride of a soft ride [rubber, plastic or inflatable] the correct wheel will guarantee easy movement.

It is important to note that the elders know what pans rolling does to the steelband, you will NEVER get that vibe with pans on a float, we are responsible for teaching out youth not them telling us what they want.

  • Claude and Cecil after reading Allima's points/explanations  I ain't bothering to continue discussing this rolling thing.

    • There's  something that I don't understand here, bands choose to come on the road rolling knowing the problems they will have if they depend on people to push/ pull the pans yet they did, they usually tie the pans together and use some type of vehicle but no one did that, why?

  • Referring to some of us as "advocates for pan on the road" simplifies our arguments and make them seem trite.

What we argue for is a more active and visible role for the steelbands in Trinidad's signature festival , the Carnival , at a time that should be prime time for steelbands..

The most obvious neglected role is the lack of participation in the Carnival street parade , something that was sacrificed , mostly because of our single minded pursuit of Panorama fame and fortune.

We understand that there are unresolved logistical issues that must be addressed for such an endeavor to achieve maximum success, but we believe that a proper , well organized and orchestrated re-integration of the steelbands into the Carnival parade , will be a much needed "shot in the arm" to the steelbands , and to the Carnival itself .

This could and should give the steelbands and the Trinidad Carnival a higher, more appealing international profile .

Personally , I think  that all post Carnival steelband activities, on the road and stage are greatly welcome and much appreciated , and only help to demonstrate the important role that the pan plays in Trinidad's culture.

And BTW , I'm still recuperating , but I'm feeling better day by day.

I sincerely appreciate the best wishes and birthday greetings from my friends.

They made me feel that much better.

  • Mostly elders were pushing and pulling pans on Republic day and all ah dem BUN. Some complained of aches and shoulder pain afterwards.Young people eh want no part ah dat! Some players had to stop playing to continue pushing when people packed up. One captain said to me "Clarkie, is ah good ting we only make one round and not two as was the original plan, otherwise we woulda dead". However he also said for short journeys e.g. We Beat on the Western Main Rd. he plans to pay pushers, as well paid pushers will cost a lot less than the tractor and the driver, but this can't happen for carnival days.

    • Gerard, Like allyuh want to kill the elders or wah. We just have to brainstorm on how best to move the pans, it definitely won't be people pushing/pulling.

I've said it before steelband ain't no music band, what they bring rolling on the ground will never happen on a float, always remember young people are resilient they WILL adapt.

Was there any reason other than cost that you all did not tie the pans together and have them pulled?
