St. Vincent Carnival - 1959 - Paddy's Archives

CASYM’s band captain Travis Roberts is of Vincentian parentage. Subsequent to his recently-published interview, WST Forum member and panman Paddy Corea (Desperadoes, Starlift (St. Vincent), Despers USA) who knew Travis’s father well, has shared some related imagery. Travis’s father (and his father’s first cousin Skully Hunte) became two of the great mas men of St. Vincent, and both were influenced by Paddy Corea’s mas in his mas camp (Paddy was a teenage bandleader then). Skully Hunte’s mother was the first seamstress for Paddy’s mas productions. Travis’s father’s name was Edson (Sheggy) John, and he passed away a few years ago. In one of the photos, Travis’s father “Sheggy” (in the short pants to the left of that picture) is identified. Travis’s father (Sheggy’s) band name was “Bad Lads and Lasses” and produced mas for about 20 years in St. Vincent.

  • Wow!

Apparently, this great culture is embedded deep in Travis's blood!

Not to mention, Travis is an excellent leader!

    Be encouraged Travis!

Congrats on a flawless performance panorama night!

  • I had the privilege of knowing and playing 'Mas' in Paddy's various Carnival productions while we were at Secondary school in St Vincent. Paddy is one of the most talented individuals in the 'Arts'...be it mas-man, pan-man, saxophonist - you name it and Paddy will excel on it. Not only did he do good things in the Caribbean but his talent led him to great heights in the UK and Europe generally before continuing in the US of A. Paddy is worthy of recognition in any and all of the above mentioned on the world stage.

Great to see you mentioned in this media, Paddy.....
