Brian Thomas always wanted to play steel pans. It wasn’t until he migrated to Australia from Trinidad in the 1960s that his dream came true. He soon found a way to connect with his own community here by joining the Caribbean Steel Rhythm Band. They entertained the Victorian Caribbean community for years at many private and public events. The steel pan on display is one of the pans played in Brian’s Caribbean Steel Rhythm Band in the 1970s and 1980s, entertaining the Victorian Caribbean and broader communities with their distinctive sound. It was brought to Australia in 1974 by the touring Amral’s Trinidad Cavaliers Steel Orchestra, who left their instruments behind as tokens of appreciation to the local Caribbean community
