FELIX ROACH AND CHEZ JACQUELINE SERVE... AN AMAZING GRACE

Felix ‘Sugar Fingers’ Roach has been playing the piano both as soloist and accompanist for more than seven decades. His repertoire includes...everything...Yet Felix, a revered cultural icon, can seriously claim the dubious distinction of being simultaneously unknown and forgotten in Trinidad & Tobago.

Despite being a very talented and versatile arranger/accompanist, I fervently believed that Felix’s strong suit as a soloist needed to be performed on a Bösendorfer. Nothing else would guarantee an interface for seamless connectivity between this virtuoso musician and his toy; a hitherto elusive experience...

We recorded Improvising the Classics (CD0701) in 2007 using a privately-owned baby grand of the same ilk, but I still was not entirely satisfied. My audiophile palate yearned for the surreal, ethereal, palpable sound of a 97-key Imperial Concert Grand, the Bösendorfer reference piano. The series has undergone numerous iterations and has been meticulously hand-crafted like no other instrument by Austrian artisans for over 250 years. In local parlance, this unpleasant sensation that I experienced is simply known as ‘tabanca’.

Finally the opportunity beckoned on April 19, 2011. Permission was granted for Felix to perform in situ for ‘testing the acoustics’ of the Lord Kitchener (Aldwin Roberts) auditorium at the newly- constructed National Academy for the Performing Arts.

Join Felix and Chez Jacqueline for a four-course hybrid gourmet meal - hors d’oeuvre & aperitif (The Lord’s Prayer), the offertory (Panis Angelicus), main course (Amazing Grace) with assorted local sweets for dessert (Give Thanks). Enjoy the excerpt from our new 21-track release entitled Felix Roach Plays the Spirituals on the Bösendorfer Imperial Concert Grand (Sanch CD1601).
