Panorama Final night in 1984 was a night of a number of memorable steelband performances, and WITCO Desperadoes placed forth with this arrangement of Winsford Devine's composition "The Jammer" as performed by calypsonian Baron. This performance by Desperadoes Steel Orchestra is a classic Clive Bradley arrangement that brings out the true Desperadoes sound and musical attitude.I thought that Bradley deliberately chose a tempo and rhythm with this arrangement to convey the impression of a musical jam, which may or may not have gotten across to the judges, but all in all. I think it was an outstanding performance , in spite of the fact that I've heard that Despers encountered some problems on stage. You may also at time 6:23 catch a glimpse of the band's legendary former leader , the late Rudolph Charles. From Panorama Finals Night 1984 , live from the Queens Park Savannah in Trinidad , here is WITCO Desperadoes Steel Orchestra and Clive Bradley's arrangement of "The Jammer".

  • As defending champions and having won the North Zone title a few days earlier, I thought they would have surely won on final night. When I heard them, I knew it would not have happened. In my opinion, I didn't see the need for the break-dancers. Back then Desperadoes didn't need theatrics.

  • ANY TIME THE JUDGES LISTEN TO MUSIC DESPERS WINS.

  • Ian , I've always thought that the first four bands performances were way too close for there to have been such a large gap in points between any of them.

  • Thanks Glenroy for the re-post. You can see Robert on the chariot pan at 2:35 to 2:45. I was merely being facetious when I wrote, the Jammer did not jam, since Renegades beat Desperadoes by 22 points (lol) Keep the music coming.

    Love peace and pan

  • You didn't mention the Despers flagwoman, Salah.

She was a fixture in the band for a number of years in that era

  • Great memories of this Panorama season and this performance ... everyone was still there ..including the General Himself  Rudolph Charles, with Bertie,Lincoln and Wallace taking care of the Instruments. Sir Clive Bradley with Robert Greenidge taking care of the music. Gunga Din and Crawl ..the two most effortless Bass Players in the world. Buffy, Michael and El Moose were all there on the seconds ( May all of these brothers who have left us to play in another band way up high  R.I.P.) and a host  of so many others...What a time .. what great  music ...you had to have been there, to know, feel and understand ... I was and will never forget

Check the clip 26 -29 seconds in to the song

    Yours truly

    Salah

  • Still one of my top Clive Bradley jams. I don't know what happened that Final night and the competition was stiff, but to me this one will forever be a winner.

  • Ian Franklin says that on the final night of Panorama 1984,"The Jammer" didn't jam.

That may have been so , since he was there, but this video certainly doesn't show that.

I still argue that this is one of the best Panorama performances, ever!

  • Greetings to all those that take the time to re listen to music at the best. DESPERADOES music grows on you, the more you hear it, the better it sounds
