  • The PHI is played by young pannist Derron Ellies. Visit Percussive Harmonic Instrument Facebook page for more info.

  • The first 23 seconds in her video was a total "PR" for Trinidad & Tobago, I am looking at it from that perspective not even The Great Billy Ocean Did anything close to that to let people know "I AM TRINIDAD & TOBAGO"

  • I'm a big Nicki M fan. What most people seem to forget is she never said she was a Calypsonian or Soca artiste.

She's a pop singer with Rap tendancies. If she feels sufficiently brave, independant, strong willed, call it what you want, to showcase some aspect of her heritage then I have no problem with that.

She's not walking about the streets of St James in a drugged up or drunken state begging.

At least most of the young clubbers nowadays can understand what she's singing about.

It's not all Trinispeak. Believe it or not people not everyone understands.

I feel even more supportive since she's going head to head with Bajan Rihanna.

More power to the Caribbean! and at least I get a rest from incessant Reggae.

I remember the 1950s in England when Edmundo Ros preferred it when the British Media said he was from Latin America (Venezuela).

And I can't remember him having any "Pan" in his repertoire.

Anyway who invented that synthesizer pan?

    Nuff Respect ! Nicki

  • Dave, so, you are saying the "ends" (the whole world seeing a part of Trinidad & Tobago), justify ANY "means" (promoting American "pop culture", whatever that means nowadays). Brenda, at least she went further than Marcel. lol. Eric, this is not a new genre; Pit Bull has tons of "tunes" that sound the same. Nicki does not impress true musicians, and true musicians know what I'm talking about. I'll be going to the Alicia Keys, Sade, even Janet Jackson (who is as "sexy" as they get), before I go to Nicki Minaj's concert. These young women today confuse trashy, with being sexy. And our endorsing their attitudes and behaviors, only feeds the moral misalignment. Nicki Minaj is MUCH MUCH more than the sex she sells. She has so much potential to do better, be better, and represent our country in a much better (non-American) light. She sells irresponsible sexual "turning out". To beats, not "music". And we ALL know that's NOTHING new! IMHO.

  • HEY I'ts a start, the whole world would now see a part of Trinidad & Tobago and surf to find out more!!!

  • I guess it is now time for a new genre to enter the pantheon of calypso, soca, ragga -soca, chutney..... maybe it should be called soca-pop.

  • Can someone direct me to the "steelpan opening"? What I did see, is an electronic (plastic) synthesizer, that does not even resemble a pan. (Compare to the E-Pan.) I'm also but I did not see or hear ANYTHING original. I admit, I am not a Nicki Minaj fan, and I think she is a terrible example for young women to follow. (Thankfully, my daughters are not fans either.) This girl has soooo much creative talent, it amazes me that she has to present herself the way she does. I hope our daughters learn to use their "God-given" talents, in ways that uplift their self-images. Also, it is interesting to note that not one steelband was in this video, made in the land of "steelband..."; only the P.H.I. at the intro, and the player was not fit enough to be shown. (Was that Boogsie's hands?) Not one pan in this video, and the pan sample used only at the intro. So, Nicki's aim is to "turn out" our young women? That is EXACTLY what our country needs: "turned out" young women. Like Nicki Minaj. (BTW - "Turn out" is hip-hop slang for being sexually loose, turning tricks, or doing sex favors. Obviously, the pay is good; we all see where it got Nicki.) Please just don't complain, or act surprised, when your daughters "turn out", and become Nicki clones. This is our present-day value system, where the ENDS (fame and fortune), justifies any MEANS (turning out tricks). Compare her to another one of our daughters, Queen Omega, and you will see the difference between being classy and being trashy.

Nicki Minaj had to "turn out" in the studios of New York to get her fame and fortune, and, although I am not one who is big on conspiracy theories, young entertainers like herself and "boy wonder" Marcel, help strengthen the "Illuminati" argument. Hopefully, these young people will soon come to learn that with power, comes great responsibility, and that is truly does not profit anyone to gain the world, and lose their soul in the process.

And, I will NEVER support ANY "Trinbagonian" entertainer that fails to include our national instrument - pan - in their act. PERIOD!!! This video failed to entertain or impress me. When I want to hear that kind of music, I will rather listen to Pit Bull, and if I want to see women "turn out", I visit the "gentlemen's club" (if you know what I mean).
