  • One of my favorite  pieces of Renegades, is where this pan fan started to take notice,

  • Hi Guys

All of you have valid points but Glen's point about the "body of work" is significant. For instance how many panorama arrangers have arranged classics for the music festival and how many of them have standout arrangements for orchestras and calypsonians. This debate can go on for a long time and I am enjoying the comments. By the way Foy Despers Melda, which I like, was done in 1966 and is not 47 years old. Incidentally I think the Despers 1966 double album to be one of the greatest.(Sill have it in my collection).

  • I agree with the sentiments expressed here, my favorite for best arranger however is Jit, hands down. He may have won nine but there were others such as Pan in A Minor and Earthquake, that were also clear winners but I guess the judges of the day had the final say.
  • Thank you, Jerome.

As a matter of fact, these arrangers brilliance are not restricted just to Panorama, and judging their careers only by Panorama is indeed selling them short.

Both Jit Samaroo and Boogsie Sharpe have composed and arranged music in the classical format among their many musical endeavours, and I can't even list all Tony William's musical accomplishments.

Earl Rodney's "Friends and Countrymen" album was ground breaking, and Beverly's Desperadoes "Tripple Crown" double album of 1966 is a standout in any era.

Are we only going to only look at Panorama to grade these people's contributions to the artform?

The best that one can say is that arranger x had the great fortune to win the most competitions on Panorama Finals night.

There is a lot more that goes into winning panorama besides the arranger.
  • Mr Glenroy Joseph,s statement is quite edifying,,,my interpretation would be avoiding or preventing friction,,,Beethhoven,,,Mozart  or the other clasical scientist  were never ever rated indeed.
  • DJ, your point is well taken, but sports have officials, that like panorama judges, do have a huge impact on the outcome of the game.  As to the years that Smooth sat out, by the same token, if he had competed, who is to say that he would not have been beaten ALL TEN TIMES?  I guess we will just have to AGREE TO DISAGREE.  As to the rest of my colleagues who are remaining silent, please JUMP IN.  I know that you have an opinion.  We would like to hear ALL opinions.  This is the highest and best use of this forum.  A HEALTHY AND PUNGENT EXCHANGE OF IDEAS.  Peace!
  • I do respect the latter statement Prone to  Human Bias mentioned by D.J., now lets place ourselves in this situation,, whereby we have done the best of our ability in whatever field of concern, with the expectation of promotion,, with nothing being had in the longrun,,,,i leave the answer to the viewers,,,,this is reality and not fiction.
  • The problem with using Panorama wins as the yardstick is that unlike sports, a human panel decides the results. Panorama results are therefore entirely subjective and very prone to human bias.

Also, you have to be sure you are comparing apples to apples. For example, Smooth is #3 in the list of winners, but he was not a competitor for 10 years between 1989 - 1997. Who is to say he may not have picked up 3 or 4 wins during those years?
  • From the inception i wanted to mention something of importance on this site after looking at the   unbelievable quality and performance of steelppan ,,the Ministry of Culture Tourism and Sport should Honour all Arrangers of Quality,Tuners is a must and all Professional steelpan players BEFORE DEH  DEAD,,a dead man or person cannot enjoy being annointed or whatever ,HE DONE   DEAD   AREADY,,presumablly this should be done by the Prime Minister or President of T & T,, persons that deserve this is JIT  SAMAROO,,,,LEN..B..SHARP,,,,..R..GRENIDGE and god knows knows who else
  • Hi Glen, PANORAMA WINS as the benchmark?  Absolutely!  Because as stated earlier, it is the highest Pan honor to date.  Let me go off on a little tangent.  In cricket, as a batsman you can have the prettiest stroke.  However, you will be remembered by how many centurys you made.  As to The Great Master they can be dismissed from these proceedings.  They never had head to head competition every year.  When it comes to Earl Rodney I am a fan of mammoth proportions, but he does not have enough Panorama wins.  Granted the subject is not a simple one, but when there is competition number of wins is the yardstick.  In Basketball the Boston Celtics are considered the best of all times, solely base on the number of championships.  Same principle!
