The song "Perfidia" (as in perfidy- deceit, faithlessness) was written by Mexican composer Alberto Domínguez .The English version was published in 1939 and became a hit for Xavier Cugat in 1940.It was performed by many artists including Nat King Cole, Ben E. King, Linda Ronstadt, Glen Miller and many others.Here it is arranged by legendary pan arranger Dr Jit Samaroo and performed by the Renegades Steel Orchestra at the 1999 concert, "Panorama Champions of the 20th Century...'A Tribute to Excellence'.".

    I agree, the Stanley Black version is beautiful , as is the  Spanish lyrical version by Nat King Cole.

    It is interesting that in the fifties and sixties, Latin sounds like this tune  were some of the preferred sounds for steelbands on the road.

    Back then most calypsos were simple melodies that didn't excite the steelbands, until Sparrow and Kitchener started to dominate in the sixties, and to challenge the steelbands with more complex melodies.

    If you listen to the 1956 steelband parade, you'd notice that the only calypso being played was  Sparrow's "Yankees Gone"(Jean and Dinah)

    No wonder the steelbands finally decided to create their own genre of pan calypsos.

    Yes ODW. The Stanley Black version you posted, (I also have it on CD), does hit home.

    It was one of those classic tracks that I (in the early 60s) would proudly waltz to.

    Glen, I can't get enough of this Renegades version. This tune was also quite popular with

    the combos.

    Glen, thanks to you I now have a deeper appreciation for the song, my brother-in-law who is his late 70s brought me a Stanley Black cd  a friend gave him while on a visit to Trinidad and I found this version on the cd...it really hits home....http://youtu.be/OjP9-0P5Qjg

    Thanks for posting Glenroy, I have this CD and of course this is my favorite from Renegades!!! I know you are so resourceful, can you get a video of Renegades when they performed Joey Lewis' Pint o wine and won Pan in the 21st Century in 2003?
