That is something you will never see, the closest was at a  Steelband music Festival when Skiffle Bunch won with Boosgie Cadenza at the end or else the Illinois Band would have won.                                                                                                                                                         A Foreign Arranger or Steelband could win in a Music Festival but not a Panorama, Panorama is we thing,

  • Final take on an exhausted  almost non-significant issue which grabbed our attention. In any competitive event anyone, country, group or else can be victorious, Panorama even. No one, country, people, group maintains monopoly indefinitely no matter how great, gifted, genius, creative or talented; because you win most of the time don't mean you will always win, neither Tiger,Serena, Team America,Ali, Sugar Ray, Tyson and the list goes on. Remembers Hatters and Nutones in 1998  and more recently Silver Stars.Championships Judge by man ,time, distance or else....will be determined by the  performance presented at that time and place (or stage), as the saying goes "judge what you see and hear on the stage presently".Oh!! 2012 0lympics,Javelin, an event dominated, ruled and controlled by the  Europeans for ever it seems (their  'we thing')...won by a Trinbagonian Athlete, unthinkable before the end result. Music, artistic yes but no one has a monopoly on arrangement, you may not like something but hat does not mean its not good. Take a listen to the likes of  Narine, Sharma,Earl Rodney and others regarding musical arrangement. To quote Rodney, "Music for steel bands is arranged in a similar way to conventional orchestra".

  • Interesting..parochial but interesting. I have no intent to become engage in trivialities or parochialism. I am seeing the forest from the trees.Pan is much bigger than panorama, an annual musical event (carnival staple) which incidentally did not originate, started or created (emphasis) in (T/T), Trinbagonians mastered it, took it to a new level kudos.Be mindful that life is dynamic nothing remains the same not even music and arrangements or creativity (revisit some of the musical arrangements of yesteryear) the journey of Jazz also serves as an example of dynamism. For those who wish to cremate pan(panorama), chest beating and disrespect for non T/T musicians.. it's not nice..we need each other to move pan where it should be amongst the instruments of the world, not just a tokenism in a jam session but feature permanently in symphonies, orchestras, accompaniment et.al. Moving on, remember Winifred Atwell and Pan am All stars, Mia Gormandy and the likes that's where Pan deserve to be. Enjoy (I do) Boogsie, Smooth, Pelham,Ray and a;; those great arrangers but remember parochialism encourages tunnel vision which limits development and progress.

    • Nicely said bro.

  • PanWe thing mentality is restrictive and would see the demise of the instrument left to Trinagonists With this myopic attitude.Dont you get it, it's an instrument like Sax,Piano, trumpet et.al. mastered by Trinagonists also, Andy Narell and others of his ilk is re spossible for the journey the pan has travelled. Those great arrangers and musicians from Trinbago, who have been embraced in universities and other forums with their pan talent might not have been possible...With the narrow minded "We thing foolishness" . Please let it rest, don't stifle progress with nonsensical attitudes.

    • Alexis, music is art, you have to be creative, very very creative if you want to compete on trini big stage. Take for instance Peter Minshall or Brian Mc Farlane, do you believe they are more creative than Big Mike of Legacy? If your answer is 'yes', Then its the same for the hundreds of trinis who get their music degrees in music and decide to arrange music for pan and also decide to challenge the maestro Boogsie. To this day, none of them show any creativity to win the trini panorama.  The trini people will let you know if they are capable. If yourmusic is good it will stand out. Look at American pop music, thousands of songs, how many singers stand out, say, since Michael Jackson died? One I can think of, Bruno Mars. people like the music because its different. Alexis, this is the kind of progress we need to see from foreign and young arrangers to match up with Boogsie and Smooth today.

      • Because arrangers like Andy have not made it to  the finals and challenge the likes of Boogsie,Smooth and the others all great and creative arrangers, does that mean that the music is not good,so once people love your music its good!! Could you give me a scientific analysis of what defines good music and its arrangement? You are saying that people like Bruno  Mars music because it' s different, isn't Andy's ,its a bit of  contradiction..don't.'you think. If you are equating Andy and Trinidad arrangers and musicians, in the same light or parallel with Minshall/Mc Farlane  and Big Mike comparison  ..sad and disrespectful. There is a competition..musical arrangers enter...their goal is to win the prize not to challenge boogsie or any other, Boogsie's  arrangements don't always win, others have..so does that make Boogsie any less a great arranger..not by a long shot. No matter how great, creative, gifted or genius you are, its the performance at the time of   the presentation that makes you win, judging what is heard and seen  that time. Hatters,Nutones and recent times Silver Stars considered underdogs ..bears out that point. Javelin, a European  (their  "we ting" ) dominated, controlled monopolized event for ever...was won in 2012 Olympics by a Trinidad Athlete ..unthinkable,against all odds may be a million or more to one...almost impossible...before it happened. Please lighten up guys..anything is possible in a competition. Finally Andy is not trying to change your thing, he is just contributing the way he know how and choose to it's called democracy. Please don't evoke a 1977 (Short Shirt) Tourist Leggo spirit. Peace, one love.

  • If we just continue to say Panorama is fixed we will never accept the Judges Decisions. Du Du Yea Mi -Woman on the Bass - Rebecca were also some of the Decisions the Panorama Judges made. We always think that the Judges has erred when they don't see it our away. As I said before the only Band or Supporters that agree with the Panorama Results is the Band the that Win. Judges can't please everyone. They just do their Jobs. Give them a break. People would be saying the same thing about us if we were Judges.
    • A JUDGE IS A JUDGE AND ALSO A THIEF. THEY DO , AND POLICE TOO, THERE ARE CROOKS IN   EVERY CLASS.STOP MAKING EXCUSE FOR THE JUDGES  AND I KNOW SOME OF THEM WHO TAKE BRIBE ALREADY.

  • Thank you Mr. Alexis Edwards and Mr. Bob Diaz. You expressed my every thought. To quote my father, a renowned lawyer from days gone by, " I rest my case."

  • I thought your question would have generated a lot more (and virulent) responses. I am surprised to see the limited amount of responses to such a  oblique question. On the backside of your question should be posed   ""are the judges or can the judges of T&T judge a piece of music outside the norm??  The norm I think was set by the great CB. That is, intro, verse and chorus, bridge,  verse and chorus, bridge,  minor,  link to verse and chorus again, Lague (La Guerre) link to end,  or slight variations of that format. This has been going on since about 1966 from Clives association with Desperadoes. It has worn thin and there needs to be  new ideas and blood injected into the panorama (not steelband per se) or like any other art form panorama will become stale and uninteresting and DIE. There are those who see the beginnings of this already and are clamoring for a new type of annual Steelband  Cavalcade instead of Panorama.  Desperadoes being pushed out of the finals last year with a new  arranger could be cited as an example of Judges inability to understand his kind of music.  Remember JUDGING is a VERY SUBJECTIVE THING. You cant judge what you dont know,. Some other bands in the Panorama line up year after year are simply monotonous. There are only 12 notes  and a limited amount of chorde to go with those and the beauty of the music (ANY  INSTRUMENTATION)  is entirely  in the hands of the arranger and without dancers and fireworks and flagwavers and other distractions.  paddy corea Musician.
