Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Chairman of Pan Trinbago South Central Region Michael Joseph says he intends to have discussions with colleagues over the judging system of the National Steelband Panorama competitions as he declared the current system as having several flaws.
“We realised that something is very wrong and they (judges) always have south bands clustered together during competitions. The scores are also very close. We feel something is very much wrong with the judging system. We have to sit down and analyse it,” said Joseph.
He explained that Fyzabad 4th Dimension of Guapo Road was leading at the preliminary level of the single pan competition yet the band was not chosen for the finals.

Cecil the band name is Nutones........and Nutones High Mass would forever haunt some pan fans who believe that only some BIG bands must win.....and your "Only" unpopular winner statement, reinforces that bias view.
Nutones led from the Prelims by plus 10 points, and the rest of bands never closed that gap......Despers in realizing that Clive had regained his health and his musical strength was back, came the next year for the Master......so at least some payed attention, and Despers won the next year in a close tussle with Nutones "Toco Band"
Anyway far as I know there were a number of unpopular winners,if one was to hear comments made at Judge's postmortem.
In any sport or contest where the adjudicating is subjective you will have discrepancies and unfortunate biases.even though there is an alleged criteria ...Merle Albino stated quite accurately after the semi finals that " if you have the same judges every year ..you will have the same results" The Steelband body's duty is to constantly address this issue

Were these the same Judges as last year?........Lambert Phillip, Stephanie Power, Roger Saldinha, Lennox London, Jeanette Johnson and Andy Chichester.................for the Large Bands Category?...........and for the
Medium Bands Category?..............Joanne Ragbir, Richard Pierre, Junior Howell, Joslynne Sealey, Sherry Ann Saunders and Marceline Peters............I do not know,I am asking.
I think there is an error in the medium judges though. those judges mentioned there are really the judges from the small category. The medium judges were Laurel Brooms - Rogers, Damien Phillip, Michelle Dowridge and Ezra (something. can't remember her last name).
But to answer your question, the answer is yes. I have been seeing some of these judges for quite some time and there are others who recently joined the panel (like 2-3 years ago). What I can say is that the judges have been shuffled around to the different categories every year and also, they are shifted around in terms of number which can make a difference depending who is the Alternate judge.
What worries me though is that with all those switching around the results are relatively the same. Now one has to wonder if judges are really judging Panorama. hmmmm.....

I have long advocated the use of some judges from outside T&T, to remove some of the obvious biases that are endemic in the present system. The question of the musicianship of an arrangement is, to my mind not seriously considered, and I agree that the big name bands almost get "byes" to the final. I am sure that we can source judges who are accredited in the field of music and maybe on a panel of eight judges, three could be non Trinbagonian. What do you think?
I think that "WHAT THEY PLAY IN PANORAMA" only TRINIDADIANS could judge that!!!
SO TFUE AT LEAST ALSTARS WOULD'NT WIN ALL THE TIME.
