The question has been posed that PAN TRINBAGO select 2-3 tunes to be played for the PANORAMA competion. This would allow a fair competion - the judges and public would be more familiar with the tunes and able to judge the PANORAMA competion fairly what do you think?

  • u make sense joel. and royce i hear ya point on d test piece thing eh. it kinda is a good idea but still i think it may just make d panorama look a bit "music festivalish" and some persons may have a problem with dat. im not sayin nuttin bout classical im jus sayin dat hearin d same ting over n over wil get boring. now it might b a good idea if its jus 4 final night . . . .maybe. im jus tryin to think right now in all directions. . . doh bash meh opinion eh! lol!

    Ash.
  • No Way! It would restrict the arranger's creativity, not to metion those who do their own compositions.
Most arrangers pick tunes based on their vibes, a good example of this, was Deltones playing "I'm not drunk", which I really enjoyed & would have missed out on hearing it, if such a rule was in place.

Also Im fed up with all this nonsense about being "fair", life isn't fair!
First the Panorama was split & now the limits are lowered, all to make it more "fair" on all the bands, Why? The top bands have worked hard to get there, "paid their dues" & did not need rule changes to make life easier for them, in fact it's not "fair" on those bands, who are most effected

Although there's a criteria to be followed (Apparently!), Judges are human & will always have their preferences, as do we, I love All Stars, the next man can't stand them, thats just how it is!
  • i do agree with marcus, gospel and sweetface, however something has to be done..

in years gone by calypsonians wrote songs that were great for pan, these songs were heavily promoted on radio so that everyone knew them. i get the impression that nowadays this is not really the case..
there is now a lot of pan players writing good calypso's but again are these commercially viable??????

i may have said this on another topic, but i believe panorama is primarily a carnival fete as well as a music competition. This makes judging difficult because for those who have played on a final night must realize that the north stand is probably more important to get rocking than the grandstand..

Too answer the main question, Panorama is very rarely judged fairly, you not gonna please everyone all the time.
  • No Way! After bands having the option to choose tunes released in previous years, it would be a setback to limit it again. We need to move forward. Actually, I prefer when 10 mins of music was the norm...I feel quite cheated when I hear (or play) only about 8 mins of music. It's over too quickly. Does anyone know why this change was made?
    • I believe it started when they split Panorama & put the medium & large catogories together,
the reason given was they wanted to save time.
If that is the case, there's no reason not to change it back now
  • No way...that's a nightmare waiting to happen; I mean can you imagine all the bands playing the same tune for the semis and finals? It would kill the Panorama and it will make a poor DVD as well...after a while it will be like hearing the same thing over and over again. Not only that but some composers might stop writing for Panorama as well, if they know only 2 or 3 tunes will be selected...what's the point in spending months writing a song if the odds are great that it won't be used? Finally, if the Panorama becomes a dull affair, people won't go to it and foreigners won't come in for it either...
