The product that is Trinidad and Tobago Carnival comprises the social gathering; the street festival; the street theatre; music and rhythm; people. Things do evolve with time but the essential elements and "flavour" could be preserved for centuries or even millenia. That is what the experts call branding and product/service differentiation.
I don't think many of them have changed much either. But ours is dynamic and continues to grow and change. I have watched these changes since about 1935/36 when I hid form the blue devils behind a big box on Henry St in POS where we lived at the time.Trust me, it is not dying. It's changing.

Sadly, the Long Island, NY carnival did not survive.
Please note Long Island Carnival was not established they were only around for a couple of years,and bad behavior killed it.
Not bad behavior but bad organization. There was no trash bins nor portable toilets that was a major part of the short lived carnival.
