Dr. Remy,
I was well and truly blessed listening to your fair analysis of the bands, I hope you continue in the job until I am old...almost forgot, I am a bit old in the tooth...LOL
I hope Pan Trinbago will take heed to your words about improving the Judging Criteria because as you said there is no mention of points awarded for a conclusion and some meanings are not clearly defined. There is something that troubles me, for the last two Panoramas I have seen a band play a very simple arrangement compared to bands like Desperadoes, Phase II, etc. and place in the top three...it baffles me. Are bands rewarded/penalized for their difficulty levels or is it ok to play a simple calypso version of "Mary Had a Little Lamb?"
In the future I hope that the judges notes will be available to the public for all bands...maybe then, I will stop grumbling once I see their assessments.
Thanks again for exposing the wonderful things that occur within a Panorama arrangement.
i always thought that even a simple 2-chord tune, if skillfully arranged and executed, could well be a showtopper on a level of a 'big' tune. just look at Deltones - somebody in fact said something about that very thing.... "i'm Not Drunk" is a very simple tune, only 2 or 3 chords; and it was the clever arrangement - modulation, change key, harmonization (new concept i learned from Dr Remy!) - that brought it up to panorama level.

Rumor has it I might get in trouble for what I said about my dissatisfaction with the categories on the judging sheets. Since I played with Invaders and arranged for Hatters a few years ago I am not allowed to judge large or medium bands. This year I judged small bands and Junior Panorama. The judging sheets are much better for the Junior panorama. The categories for point placement are well thought out. I have probably made a few folks upset with my comments about the judges sheets. Best I just keep those thoughts for myself from now on. I would be happy to talk to you on my private email. steelpanlady@yahoo.com
I doubt you made many of the bands upset about the judging sheets!! For years things have been in a mess. Not only are some criteria "questionable" or poorly placed, but bands get limited helpful comments....perhaps due to the fact that the judges don't understand the criteria?? (For example, one year my band got a comment..."Well done"...but was marked with low points in the same criteria. How does anyone learn from something like that?? And it was very typical.)
The things you said needed to be said. It's also refreshing to hear those comments come from a learned, respected, competent individual. If the judging sheets need improvement, then they need improvement. Those that aren't willing to accept constructive criticism towards the betterment of pan and Panorama shouldn't be leading our movement.
I hear you and understand, this is your livliehood you are dealing with.
but - and it is a BIG but - it needed to be said.
those who design the judging sheets need to hear that, and step UP and get their stuff organized. As you made that comment, in my mind i was saying "But wda is this? Aren't ALL the score sheets standardized? Aren't they all the same for all categories and sizes of bands?"
just logically speaking, and for fairness sake - that is the way it should be. and the way I had assumed it was - HA! silly me!
All of the score sheets are the same. There are no differences. The one that is different is the ones used by the Pan in the Classroom Unit, Victor Prescod. There was some real thought that went into those sheets and you can see decisions on educating the judges if you search him right here. I do not know who designed the judges sheets for the conventional bands. I can not professionally say any more. My real passion is arranging and composing for steelpan. It is hard to get a good band to give me a chance. You can read about me in "when Steel Talks" women in pan. Do a search.
