R.I.P. Owen "Tan-Man" Horsford

Another old friend has passed away.Owen "Tan-Man" Horsford was a fixture in Marabella in the sixties and seventies, and a lifelong member of the Southern Marines Steelband family. After a long struggle with prostate cancer, Tan-Man passed away on Wednesday 24th, October 2012.A gifted artist, Tan-Man was responsible for the look of the Marines in the sixties, from band logos and t-shirts, to banners, posters ,carnival drawings etc.A real mas man, he was one of those young men who mastered designing the intricate Indian and Fancy sailor type costumes that were favored by the young men of that era.I remember one year in the early sixties we all played a Monday mas with Southern Marines when the band featured Fancy Sailors, and of course his costume had that extra Tan-Man flair. His picture from that portrayal is seen above, and is featured in Kim Johnson's Illustrated Story of Pan.R.I.P. Owen "Tan-Man" Horsford.

  • Bertel's photo "Dance d' Fireman" certainly brought back memories , of my days playing fancy sailor.

I don't have my picture available though there is one somewhere , but fortunately we have a photo of our friend the late Owen "Tan-Man" Horsford , who also played mas with us.

He was a mas designer , and a talented artist so his costume was more elaborate than mine , but you get the idea.

And , allyuh shoulda seen me dance de fireman !

  •  From ALL AH WE family. He was one who was devoted to his culture, and a friend to all. He will surely be missed for all the smiles and comfort that he gived.

  • Condolences to the Family.

  • Greetings So sorry about Tan Man  We also designed our costumes like that especailly when we played Fireman in Point Guidance Dr. Lance Seunarine

  • Condolences goes out to the Horsford family. I knew Tan-Man very well. My uncles were the founders of Southern Marines and I know he will be truly missed.  My aunt won a competition years ago wearing one of Tan-Man's costumes in Trinidad.  He was loving, caring and fun to be around.  I will truly miss him.
