Trinidadian Claudia Jones was a civil rights worker, refugee and journalist. She set up the first ever weekly West Indian paper and in 1959 in response to the racist riots of 1958 created the first ever carnival. She also campaigned against racist immigration and for decent housing for immigrants from the Commonwealth who had been invited to Britain by Enoch Powell

  • Claudia Jones was truly an amazing woman .. As for the Notting Hill Carnival , unless there was a determined , organised conspiracy by the Grove people to air-brush Claudia Jones out of the carnival , I can not fathom why her name was never mentioned .

She may have had a carnival in a Town Hall , or a church hall , or some other place along with her beauty competition . But on the streets of de Grove , the only name mentioned was Mrs Lazlett in 1966 . And the steel band was led by Russ Henderson .

The idea could have come from Claudia Jones . But the two women are deceased so we'll never know .

After Mrs Lazlett , there was Selwyn Baptiste , V.J Ramlal , Leslie Palmer , Alex Pascal and then Claire Holder . I lost interest after the committee became a limited company .

Claudia Jones - Great woman ...

Claudia Jones - Starting the Notting Hill Carnival ... I'm not convinced .

  • FALSE.  VERY FALSE.  CLAUDIA JONES WAS NOT ONE OF THE PEOPLE IN THE 1965 DISCUSSIONS ABOUT ORGANIZING A STREET CARNIVAL IN LONDON. I WAS AND SO WAS LESLIE PALMER THE MAN WHO STARTED THE WHOLE THING. HE IS ALIVE AND RETIRED IN TOBAGO. WE WERE IN ALL SAINTS CHURCH BASEMENT IN THOSE DAYS AND SOMETIMES AT THE MANGROVE . 1966 SAW THE FRUITS OF OUR DISCUSSION.  THE FIRST LONDON STREET CARNIVAL.  THE PERSON WHO SHOULD GET THE CREDIT IS LESLIE PALMER (TEACHER,, TRUMPETER)  paddy corea

  • Thanks Michaele, I say it, and there is another one that Ajamu Nyomba posted in the same. Interesting!

  • @ Berrtel    I found the information about her being involved in UK Carnival in another

video...one that is 'attached' at the end of this one.  It was called "Hidden Herstories" and

she was one of several featured notable women.  However, both of these video are too short,

and I was left with a thirst for more information.  Good now to at least know this much !

    Fascinating.

  • Good history to know! Where is the part about the West Indian Carnival in Brit?

  • ASE!
