In the 1940's, the boys of the Green and Lyons families of Marabella founded South Trinidad 's legendary steelband, The Southern Marines Steel Orchestra. The Greens were a popular Marabella family, and the youngest son David was a personal friend. In the sixties, Trinidad music bands played a form of Latin / calypso/Jazz, and many bands and combos favored a Latin style that featured the timbales. To me,two of the best and most flamboyant timbales players of that era outside of the Latin American stars were from Marabella. They were my friend and former band mate Wendell "Creeper" Reese, and Billy Green.Billy Green was a popular and talented drummer, and I knew of him long before I got to know the Green family, after we moved to Marabella in 1960.On Sunday morning radio music shows of that era, I would often hear among the musicians being introduced "Billy Green on drums".I first saw Billy Green in action as a member of the Joey Lewis Orchestra of the early sixties.Band watchers like myself were impressed by his style and skills on the little drums, and when Ron Berridge created his All Stars band, it was no surprise that Billy Green was a member. This classic Ron Berridge/ Bertram Inniss composition "Lopinot Chant" showcases a fine example of Billy Green on the timbales. From 1965, here is the Ron Berridge Orchestra and "Lopinot Chant"
