For your enjoyment, we present the classic sounds of one of the world's greatest steel orchestras, The West Indian Tobacco "Gay" Desperadoes. In those days the band still had a "Badjohn" image, and "Gay' was added in the band's name to soften the image.Of course it was subsequently removed from the title when the word's meaning was changed.included are Selections from the Desperadoes classic 1966 Album, "tripple crown Winners"featuring:Sparrow's "Roslind"Exerpts from the movie "The Sound of Music"and "Indian Summer".Arrangements are by yet another Trinidad pan and music legend, Beverly Griffith.

I'd like to humbly request that you post "Melda"
    Please
  • We all do stupid things in our lives, and mine was giving away the Triple Crown Winners album when I migrated in 1970, something I regret to this day, so whenever I hear tunes from that album it takes me back to the days when there were pan in the dances and that special sound which was Despers. At age 20, what do you know?.
  • To you Glenroy I say God's blessings for the magnificent contributions you have been making to the WHS family. I got a tape of these songs from "Sensei", a former captain and have cherished it immensely. This year I was given a CD by Ian Franklin for which I am even more grateful. I experienced Desperadoes on Carnival day, I believe it was 1966, swinging into Frederick from Park and was so mesmerized by the sound of Czardas. The memory has remained with me forever. Those players were out of this world, and even though generations have changed, the sound of the Desperadoes is as commanding and as tantalising to us minions as it always has been. Great steel orchestra. Great music on the pans. Oh, how I wish they could resurrect some of these pieces with today's players. Beverly is still around, and just as finely-tuned as he always was. Big up to you Beverly Griffith.
  • This entire album is an amazing production. Seventeen tunes, beautifully arranged and well played.

I wonder how many steel bands of today are capable of producing such a varied repertoire of music as found on this classic double album?

With the all the emphasis placed on the Panorama competition , I doubt there are many.
  • that was the magical sound that made Laventille hills come alive, any time I walk up that hill I would start running up from the time I hear that mystical sound, thanks Desperadoes still the greatest steelband in the world
  • I remember playing Jourvert listening to Czardas near the old Princess Building continuing down Frederick street
as judging points were along the way. For those of who have not shared this experience, listen to the "Bomb "
    tune Czardas.
