As crime wave rises in east PoS - Panmen running scared

Trinidad and Tobago Guardian

Steel OrchestraTrinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Pan players from steelbands based in east Port-of-Spain are on the run as the country’s crime wave continues to escalate, says Gerard Mendez, chairman of Pan Trinbago’s northern region.

Up to late yesterday, six bands—Nostrand Symphony, City Sun Valley, Freelancers, Blue Diamonds, Neal and Massy Trinidad All Stars and Witco Desperadoes—were reported to have been directly affected by issues related to gun violence in this part of the capital.

....One week ago, officials of eight-time National Panorama champion Neal and Massy Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra on Duke Street were forced to abruptly end Panorama rehearsals when loud explosions were heard in its catchment area.

Meanwhile, ten-time National Panorama champion Witco Desperadoes, commonly referred to as the “pride of the hill,” had again left its Laventille home, for the National Infrastructure and Property Development Company (Nipdec) car park on Cadiz Road, Belmont.

However, the T&T Guardian has learnt that this would be the last year the property would be used as Desperadoes’ alternate Carnival home.

  • Sad, just sad to think that such a small and blessed nation could become so violent. I seem to recall the PM's speech about ending crime within three months of being elected, well it's three years and counting. when will this absolute madness end?. The ones responsible for all the drugs and the guns coming into our country, which the idiotic youths are using to commit their own genocide, reside in their safe  gated communities and are never bothered by the authorities, because "Money Talks". You know what I mean. Funding for elections and so on.

  • Ah hear somebody say, "At least dey cyar blame de panmen like in de old days".

Seriously, though , crime in Trinidad is financed by corruption and drug money, and locking up the violent  street criminals, though obviously necessary, isn't going to solve the problem.

That worked decades ago when it was all about gang turf and machismo, and there was no big money involved.

Today, however, corruption has a trickle down effect, and where there are financial incentives for criminal activities, street thugs are easily replaceable.

And according to statistics Trinidad (and Jamaica) lists very highly among the most corrupt countries in the world.

(According to those stats we should be envious of the Bajans)

    • Aye Glen, A man was arrested and charges for killing another after the victim bought some Doubles in Arima. They charge the accused  for Murder and having an illegal Firearm, the accused ask the judge, " Where is the Evidence", the judge ask the Prosecutor  where are the Exhibits, the Prosecutor said,  We don't have any. What kind of nonsense is that?, No evidence? The Law is crooked, that's why these Criminals do their dirt and get away with it. see link,    http://www.newsday.co.tt/crime_and_court/0,189554.html

    • Don't worry they got this under control according to the new Minister of National Security...

"The Government has approved an order of 2,500 9mm pistols to deal with the country’s runaway crime."

      • Killing a few black boys won't solve the problem, the only way to combat organize crime is to shut down the flow of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

  • Its a Sad day when an Institution like Desperadoes have to Run from the Hill. I will always remember as a Teenager Michael ' Zarak' Broomes , Clyde Babb, Frank 'Crawl' Finlay and Myself happily used to make that trek up the Hill to  Practice with Desperadoes. Those were the Bad old days of Despers, but now Despers has to run from the Hill. What a Blasted Shame! Panorama is the Life line of the Steel bands and these Young Criminals are slowly Killing it.

    • Valentine,

We have to come down on those that make it easy for a young person to become a criminal.

  • to VAL. YOUNG

Be safe my man...if you decide to go. Desperadoes apparently chose ''Super Blue's '' Spankin'' Interesting choice. The bass  is right up Robert's alley. I always thought Robbie has  had excellent bass work on his previous works. Your thoughts!
