New book on the legendary orchestra coming soon
Port of Spain, Trinidad, W.I. - Invaders Steel Orchestra is calling on local and foreign pan players to assist Dr. Jeannine Remy, Senior Lecturer in Music in the Department of Creative and Festival Arts at University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus - with her research into the band’s history.
In 1989 Dr. Remy embarked on her research journey. Delving into this legendary band’s mystical past, she has been able to capture a treasure chest of coveted interviews with the band’s founders Ellie Mannette and Francis Wickham, and other elders of the band such as George Goddard and James Inniss. These interviews accurately captured the unfolding of milestone events such as the name change date from the Oval Boys to Invaders on VE (Victory in Europe) Day 1945. Dr. Remy’s study also contains a large collection of photographs dating back to 1940.
“Invaders Steel Orchestra: The History of a Legendary Trinidad Steelband” is the title of the book and its publisher is The University of the West Indies Open Campus Press, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago.
As her research comes to an end, Dr. Remy wishes to list in the Appendices the Full Name of each person who played with the band, the instrument they played and the year/period they were with the band.
The management of Invaders Steel Orchestra supports Dr. Remy’s work, and is asking all Invaders players past and present to email their information to invaders1940@yahoo.com or steelpanlady@yahoo.com. Persons wishing to phone in their information can do so through the band’s Secretary Desiree Myers at 1 (868) 798-7573 or Dr. Remy at 1 (868) 684-2742.
