  • Frenzy of the Caribbean-Hameed Shaqq
Hameed Shaqq warmed up the venue with some national beats from Trinidad and Tobago, he held a workshop to introduce steel-pan drum to visitors.

Hameed brought his grandfather's steel-pan drum to Beishan to talk about the history and the making of this musical instrument.

After some solo performance, Hameed started to teach the crowd some basic techniques to tick out the perfect notes. An amateur rapper did a free style rap with him and others danced around in Beishan Hall.

“I’m really surprised that the rapper just went freestyle with my music, this workshop not just spread my special drum, but more like a communication.” Hameed said in surprise.

“I had performed at the 2004 and 2005 International Chinese New Year Night Parade in Hong Kong, but this is the first time I have visited mainland China. I would like to have more opportunities to perform here.” Hameed told us with joy.

    “Best one ever”, Organizers
The organizers are very satisfied with the outcome and thanked all the musicians, volunteers, crewmembers and other participants who came for making this year’s festival a great success.

“This is the best one ever,” said JJ Verdun, vice-president of the organizing committee. JJ admitted that it has been some hardship ever since organizing music festivals in Beishan three years ago, but no one ever thought of giving up and they just “carried on bringing more Western music and cross-cultural experiences to all music lovers.”

Claiming the biggest and the best music event in south China, the Beishan Music Festival is held twice a year in Zhuhai-starting with Beishan World Music Festival in April and followed by Beishan Jazz Festival in October. Zhuhai’s vice mayor, Ms. Long Guangyan showed the city’s kind support as we found her enjoying the show in low profile. Ms. Long said she’s glad to know the success of the event. “It’s nice to gather all communities, schools, even the whole city together through world music. We will always assist the event to make it a best musical event in the region and we hope more people can join the festival.” She added.
