Last year I saw some primary school age kids on the shores of Lake Erie playing steeldrums, and I couldn't help but smile, as I remembered the first time I recall seeing a steelband on a j'ouvert morning many years ago.
They were (to my young eyes ) some large men beating on drums hanging around their necks.
Suddenly, the police came and chased them.
This may have been 1949 or 1950,and I remember they were chanting some obscene lyrics to the tune of "I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts", a song that was first popular in the late 1940's.
Maybe that had something to do with the police actions.
In spite of everything, we've definitely come a long way!
I am happy to be able to put a face to the name"Cobo Jack."I have heard many things about him.He could easily be considered as one of our National Heroes of Pan.

Hmmm - Happy to see all are well and "kicking"! I want "Cobo" Herbie Jack to know that he has, remarkably, retained the "facial picture' that I have of him, since "Miss May" used to bring him, when a child, to 'lime' at our house (Pantins) on Henry St. He is a master pan-man and his dedication to the art-form is unquestionable. I am very proud of him. Congrats "Herbie"!

Those of us TRINIs born pre 1950s and who are still alive today, myself included, have truely lived in historic times as far as PAN is concerned.
We have been blessed by witnessing first hand the ingenuity, skills, talent and determination of the pan pioneers
