  • Strange having this discussion when everyone in the know, knows that electric pans/"amplified pans" are not allowed in PT competition, yet bands are amplified using external microphones.Bertie used direct pick-up mics attached to the instrument ( as used in electric guitars) as against using a multi-directional around the pans......so was Highlanders pans really amplified pans or were they electric pans as per an electric guitar, piano, quatro etc and was it because of that difference the sound was called "Chinee music".....NB: the "Chinee sound" had a lot to do with the quality of mics that were used ( fairly cheap, not good quality, sold by a store on Henry and Prince Street corner).

Tripoli may have been amplified first, but Bertie did the first electric ( amplified) pan.

  • To cut to the chase and action the way the Ghost suggests (The way you separate fact from allegory, is to look at all the evidence, and then form a sensible conclusion).

Clyde Borde stated it was done by Caspar Durant Sr.

Caspar Durant (Jr.) stated it was done by his dad Caspar Durant Sr. in 1961 and 1962.

Michael Kernahan stated that Hugh Borde said, This Picture was taken on The Western Main Road St James 1957.

Tripoli amplified Pan (Trinbagopan.com Staff Article Interview Recorded: February 23, 2005 Posted: March 01, 2005) states:

In 1957 "Tripoli" went to town with amplifying ah pan. Now, everybody saw the amplification of pan done by "Highlanders", but "Tripoli" was there before them in 1957. ~ Norman Darway Speaks

Misinformation About Bertie Marshall and Highlanders

Hopefully someone can date those photos of Bertie, his BertFone and when Highlanders went to town playing "Chinee music" and whether it was with Bertie's high-pitched tenors or the bert-fone or both.

  • In a true sense even if Tripoli used a Public Address (P.A.) System, they actually amplified the steelband music, because a P.A. system is defined as an electronic sound amplification and distribution system with a microphone, amplifier and loudspeakers used to to reinforce a sound source, e.g. music or a speech (source: Wikipedia). So I guess we can say that Tripoli can be credited. I would gladly like someone to do some research to find out what was the actual year. The photo tells a thousand words, but still not enough for the record books.

  • For us to hear sound through a speaker it has to be Amplified regardless of the what type of microphones are used . Sound to Amplifier to Speaker . That is why it was called a " Loud Speaker " because the sound it transmitted was Amplified . So this is exactly what Tripoli did here . Thanks .

  • About the amplification of pans was done by Casper Durant Senior. The way he did it was with two cone speakers in front of the band and he had microphones on jacks that ran into the band itself, picking up the sound that was sent through the speakers in front of the band. So tell me, is this not amplification? Yes, Bertie Marshall amplified pans but he did it some years after with a different method. He did amplify individual pans with another form But I think people's thoughts are mixed up about it. At that time, I was about 10 years old. The band was going up the road playing an excerpt from the classical piece Senenade for strings, which was done by Roy Harper. He arranged for the band around that time. And that is how the amplification came to be.

  • I know I played with them, the tank was built in Bossiere there was a group of guys from that area that played mas with the band that was part of their section. Tripoli was the pioneers of war mas.

  • Tripoli was also the first band to build a TANK over a car.

In 1957 "Tripoli" went to town with amplifying ah pan. Now, everybody saw the amplification of pan done by "Highlanders", but "Tripoli" was there before them in 1957. The fella who did that was a guy who was born in South Africa from Trinidad parentage. The last of the family, the lady lives up in de Freitas street, they call her Irene. She is the last of five and the last alive. The fella who did that was Herbert Simpson with a guy who  was working in Batoo call Durant. "Tripoli" now, was de first band to play in a church service in 1952, when one of the members died.  They played at the St. Agnes church in Clarence Street. Also, in 1952 "Tripoli" went to town with walkie-talkies. Simpson and them organized that, so that the captain could'-a talk to the members an' dem behind when they playing, an' they also had a jeep. They were a band where yah had to look at dem when it come to innovation. So, these things were there long before.

I JUST PULL THIS INFO FROM THE NET, SO MAYBE IT WAS TRUE BOUT THIS AMPLIFICATION

  • Orlando Steve you should check out the meaning of word Amplify and Bede I don't think  just because you did not know about Tripoli having amplified you should seriously doubt the fact it was done in 1957.

Did you know that Spree Simon grew up in Point Fortin?  History says he is from John John.
