A Desperadoes member has passed on

Mr. Ruppert Phillip a member of Desperadoes since 1962 has passed on.

Rupert, was a percussionist who was the only one that performed at all 50 Panorama Preliminaries and 45 of the 49 Panorama Finals.

He was formerly a member of Serenaders, but was recruited by the late Mr. Rudolph Charles in 1962. Mr. Rupert Phillip was also the brother of Mr. Elias "Pjue" Phillip one of Desperadoes noted Double Second Pannist.

I enjoyed Rupert's work especially on Desperadoes' 1966 Double LP.

My personal condolences to the family of Mr. Rupert Phillip.  (RIP)

  • Sincerest condolences to Pijou and family including the Desperadoes brethren on the passing of Rupert. As a member myself over the years, I always enjoyed Rupert's friendship, his advice, and his willingness to be of help to me wherever and whenever necessary. Rupert, Pijou, and Tash are very strong and purposeful personalities among the fraternity. Despers will surely miss him next carnival, but rest assured he is in a much better place playing his congas for all the steelbandsmen in heaven....RIP my brother.

  • Wow! FIFTY YEARS! This is a celebration and not a farewell announcement. Glad tidings my bredren. For  Despers he, too, was an institution. Guidance. Dr. Lance Seunarine

  • Condolence to the family, friends and the Desperadoes Steel Orchestra. I was a pleasure working in the percussion section with him. One of the only Congas players that played the instrument with his hands in a Panorama. May Rupert Phillip Rest in Peace.

  • The passing of a steel band member is a loss for the community. I can barely imagine how the family and supporters of Desperadoes are coping with the passing of someone who has been so actively involved for half a century. My condolences to the family, band members and supporters.
