The 4 times the panorama winner won at position #1: 1973-All Stars, 1982-Renegdes, 1991-Desperadoes and 2011-All Stars.
Five won at #4, Seven won #5, Six won at #6, Nine won at #8, Six won at #9 and Eight won at #10.
Interesting. I think I understand the logic behind the winning positions. #1 is good because all will remember who went first, including the judges. Last position also will stand out.
Positions 8, 9 and 10 are the power positions. That takes some explaining, but intuitively I think I understand why, given it's a long show. Psychologically these positions represent the high point of the show, with everybody well warmed up and in the most receptive state.
Positions 2 to 7 are left as psychologically the weakest. Unless they're big name bands, they will easily be forgotten playing in those positions.
