Glass Ceiling?

So have we in 2019 reached that dreaded 'glass ceiling' where bands that are outside that 'big 5' sacred circle are thrown under the bus? The message that this sends to every other band is that no matter how hard you try, no matter how  proficiently, well-arranged and executed, no matter how 'top drawer' a performance, the answer will always be a resounding 'No'. Unless judges don't get overly swayed by popularity and/or fan enthusiasm, unless they dare to use objectivity and make independent choices, avoid pre-conceived ideas and focus on each actual performance, there's a good chance of losing some pools of absolute talent. Judges' decisions could have very far-reaching consequences, positive and negative. Judges should remember that they're watching the very best efforts that each band is bringing and their collective decisions can be literally a matter of life or death for some bands.

Judges, ALL the bands deserve your unbiased, independent and objective attention. The finals represent another opportunity to 'do the right thing'. Let's see that right thing done, please!

I admit; I am no Christian, but then again neither was the thief who allegedly was offered "everlasting life". I admit; I am neither Jesus Christ, nor a thief, but I am able to recognize which "camps" people belong to ('scuse the grammar). How? BY THEIR WORKS! (Caps, for emphasis.) I know that some people have the ability and skills to serve two (or more) "masters" -- God, Devil, good, evil -- and, today becomes earmarked as the day some return to their "Christianity", having served the "King of Carnival" -- Bacchus.

So, I chose today, as I hope to speak to the "God" in you, and not yesterday's "Devil". Is that okay? (Rhetoric.) The Christian leader allegedly stated that "...it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than it is for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven." Think about that extreme use of metaphorical reference for a moment...

Of course, being a (bona fide) leader, he didn't just talk the talk. As written, when offered the entire "World", he allegedly rejected the "Ruler" (you know, "Satan"), telling him that his "Father's Kingdom, is of no part of this World." Those who wanted to be in his presence had to leave ALL their "riches" behind. And, he allegedly asked, "WHAT DOES IT PROFIT A MAN TO GAIN THE WORLD AND LOSE HIS SOUL?" (Again, caps for emphasis only.)

Then, when the soulless "rich man" eventually dies (sorry; money can't buy you eternal life), the family buries them according to "Christian rites", thinking that their "rich" loved one prove Jesus Christ wrong, by getting into heaven, while we ALL know ain't NO camel getting through NO needle's eye! lol. Well; as Bob Marley sang, "...they crucified Jessus Christ..."

Point is; I "know who I am and where I stand in the struggle" (Marley) If those who claimed to be "Christian" are the very ones who crowned their own leader with thorns, I should (and do) expect similar or worse treatment by men, especially the "rich" and those who are all about "that money". Of course, karma catches up to them, as in Trump's case, but even if the laws of men don't get you, the Universal Law (i.e. karma) will. As I admitted; I am no "Christian", but I am no thief either. Just a simple man who continues to be honest to himself and others. ALL about choice! To my Christian peers, safe and happy Lenten season. Protect our women and girls!

The mistake we are making , my friends is assuming that the problems facing the steelbands of T&T are pan people’s problems , but they are much more than that.
The problems are societal , and about national identity , culture ,vision and even more.
Trinidadians have not yet recognized that in a failing economy , an emphasis on culture and tourism will become a most important part of the nation's economic security.

Many Trinidadians have been reluctant to appreciate uniqueness and value of the steelpan , the national instrument.
The most unique , and most economically viable part of the culture is the steelband and it related aspects - tuning , marketing of pans etc.
But this can only be exploited to the nation's benefit if that is recognized and appreciated by all aspects of society . including the government , the NCC , the steelband leaders , the business sector and mostly by the public at large.

And the government can’t just “ wash their hands” and leave it up to pan people , it is too important to the nation’s well being.
Because it will take a national investment ,and a focus on the steelband as a centerpiece of the culture , including the carnival.
And it will need direction and leadership from all aspects of society including government , the business community and the public.

Such an emphasis on culture should produce benefits in the entertainment sector and particularly in tourism .
The culture must be promoted and marketed with the spotlight on the steelband , in such a way as to emphasize the history of the steelpan , its culture , its creators and the superior skills of the pan creators and innovators of T&T.

Increased funds in the national coffers due to tourism based on steelband activities can then be shared with the steelbands , since it would be obvious they have earned it.

The steelbands , even with exemplary leadership , cannot solve these issues by themselves.

The problem is us.

All of us , not just pan people.

Time for a Real US National Steel Pan Organization

I've been told on several occasions that there is a National Steel Pan Organization but I'm still waiting to see the evidence of such an organization.  There are thousands of Pan Players across this country including those is Schools, Colleges and State and local bands, not even counting the individuals not associated with a band.  I would have thought that what happened in New York would have brought the "National Organization" out - looking out for the interest of the players and intervening with WIADCA on their behalf.

My concern are all the young players who are left with a bad taste in their mouths after this fiasco - why should they want to be involved if they are not even appreciated on a basic level by the people who try to run what is the largest Pan Competition in the US.  Its 2017 and this blatant disrespect by WIADCA was allowed - can you imagine 5 or 10 years from now??.

Unfortunately thats not the only Pan issue going on in NY - When I learned to play pan - I was told that the band I learned to play with was my Pan family, and like most families, loyalty is expected.  I'm seeing that this is not the rule in NY - players are abandoning their home bands for other bands without even a discussion as to why they are leaving.  I'm not saying players don't have the right to play with whoever they want too - I'm saying give respect where it is due.

With the challenges the NY Pan world have to go through - the last thing I would think it needs is disrespect among the Band Leaders and the players.

Time to pull it together people, talk is just talk - a bunch of hot air that goes nowhere.

END OF TEXT

She is currently working on retaining an attorney, and this has bothered her extensively. Your email reply suggested that "On Saturday 3rd January 1998 Mrs Mona Goddard gave this site, www.seetobago.com (now www.seetobago.org), her kind permission to publish on the internet her late husbands book...". Of course, you failed to provide any tangible proof of your claim, I can assure you that my mother is of sound mind, and as her Power of Attorney, I will pursue you to the fullest extent that the law will allow me to. I understand that your email reply aimed at soliciting an emotional response, however, your actions will be remedied by the appropriate, intellectual course of action. You have brought great damage to our family, and we will be seeking retribution. That, you can count on. I hope that you show your respect for our culture and its pioneers and their wives, by ending your stealing of others' works and claiming that they gave you the rights. But, let it be known; you are in violation of my mom's copyright to her deceased husband's work, and your are receiving this second notice to cease and desist this infringement, even if you choose to continue lying on my mother. That is your karma, not hers, nor my dad's, nor mine. Neither of us steal other people's works and then lie about it. Again, be governed accordingly. You may not know us, but we are very resourceful. You will be held to account for your actions.

random thoughts

I just saw where a woman trying to disrupt some groups preparations for the Labour Day parade. This will always happen because our people don't publicise  the value and importance of our events. The labour parade puts millions of dollars in revenue in the coffers of NYC.Pan in particular helps keep a lot of people from mischief Music is one of the intelligences and especially with youth improves the operation of the brain, Concerning my new book I didn't give any details, but I will do so now. It chronicles events ,personal experiences and memories of the badjohn days and pan playing mas and pan on the streets as well as programmes in schools and notes on inventors of certain aspects of pan development. If you really LOVE pan it's a must read If I may say so myself. As Bob Gittens used to say if Gabriel don't blow his own trumpet nobody will do it for him.

Most people with a basic knowledge of the history of the steel drum/steelpan/pan, have no difficulty in connecting the percussive instrument to its Trinidad origins. However, few are able to make the connection between the instrument and “Black History”...

(Click the following link for the full article.) https://panicleusa.com/black-history-month-pan-africanism-and-the-connecting-of-the-steel-drum-steelpan-to-black-history)

NOTE TO WST MEMBERS: While some are unable to find the human decency to respect ALL people, regardless of "race", I have continued to assert that Black people are not inferior or deficient, but, simply different. Afro-Trinbagonian professionals in the social science fields may not know who I am, but I continue to earn the respect of doctorate holders in the field of psychology! I clearly understand that, in order to change behaviors, we MUST address the opinions and attitudes that fuel them.
