After Kim Loy Wong left Trinidad in 1959, the Hylanders steelband languished. When Bertie Marshall's contract with the Armed Forces Steel Orchestra ended in 1961, he took the Hylanders name and tradition to Lavantille where he formed his version of Hylanders Steel Orchestra., which was destined to take the Hylanders name to higher heights. Here is Bertie Marshall's Highlanders Steel Orchestra and "May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You"From the 1964 album, STEELBAND Calypsoes and Classics.

  • Could someone explain which was B

ertie's steelband:Hylanders or Hilanders or Highlanders?

  • Thanks for the update, Paddy.
  • Hi Glenroy

I hope you know Kim Loy (and his brother Hugh Loy) are alive and well here in NY. Kim Loy actually lives in Texas but tunes and blends for us (Despers USA) so he is here 1/2 of the year.  There is a short B&W film of Kim Loy's Highlanders made by Pete Seeger in circa 1957 featuring the young Kim Loy.

    your Vinci connection,  Paddy Corea

  • Just imagine, you in t'dad jouvert morning 400am coming down park st in the back of the band, chipping to the sound of the bass, beautiful
  • Good old Highlanders, A guy call Tabu used to come in to the Police Barracks in St James and help out the Police steel band. I wonder if he is still around.  Nixon and myself played the Tenor Pan with the police steelband. My regards to all the past members of the Trinidad & Tobago Police Steel band in the 60s.
