Happy Birthday Crazy

Crazy, my younger brother thinks that you are the greatest calypsonian to ever grace the stage. Because of his constant support for your music, I have also grown to admire your style of composition and choice of satire that has been part of the fabric of Calypso music. So to this end, I wish you a "HAPPY BIRTHDAY"

Dear Pan Lovers, will you all support a drive to change Lazarri Street to honour Mr. Lennox "Bobby" Mohamed. Lazarri Street was the home of Cavaliers Steel Orchestra and is still the home of Mr. Mohamed. Bobby is the first arranger from the Southland that won a Panorama and is the youngest winning arranger ever at 22 years old. He led Cavaliers to (2) victories and (2) 2nd place finishes at five Panorama finals (1964, 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1969) Cavaliers did not defend their title in 1968 because the band was on tour in Venezuela. Bobby also led Cavaliers to (3) 3rd place finishes at the Classical Music Festival of 1964,1966 and 1967. He is the first arranger that qualified and placed with his own classical composition of "Revalations From Beyond" in 1967. Bobby is also the first arranger that changed from the major to the minor key at Panorama, introduced dimiuendos and crescendos, hence creating dynamics. We must keep the legacy of our Pan Pioneers alive.

Panorama 2k10

It is arguable but ....All Stars would have won the Panorama if MUSIC alone were the deciding factor. Talk about CREATIVITY in arrangement !!!!!! Despers, to a lesser extent, was also impressive in that regard.

Petit Bourge History

A little piece of interesting information provided by Gary Chang Leung, also an original member of Pan Necktar:-SUNDOWN - was the first steelband using the discarded oil drums. This band was former by Gary Chang Leung, Joseph 'Mauby', Edmund Moore and Victor Toussaint. This band really took off then the William's brothers , Roy & Noel, came to live in the Petit Bourge area. it was the first band from the San Juan area to compete in the music festival at the Roxy Theatre. The songs played were 'Mambo in Brass' and 'Schubert Serenade'. The band was the first to have a sponsor and was later known as 'Carib Fascinators Sundown'.SECOND SPRING - was a smaller band with less players, who played all year round and was a spin-off from Sundown. The band was formed by Gary Chang Leung and Francine Claude Chang Leung. Gary was considered to be the first pan-tuner and arranger in Petit Buorg. Noel Williams was the other pan tuner.HILLTOPPERS - from Irving Street, was the next pan side. Wilfred Payne was the captain and Gary was the arranger.SKYLARKS = aka 'The Douglas Street Hill band was another band which was followed by 'SILHOUETTES' in 1693.Cutty Francois, Panky Sobers, and Joe Lee Soy formed this band.Henry Hosand brought out the 'Toltex Warriors' and several other mas bands.PS Others will of course have contradictory or additional information. Please add it, rather than dismiss what he has told us (Pene)

Pan Sonatas Supremacy

It has been nearly two weeks since the Pan Sonatas Steel Orchestra was decided as the 2009 New York Panorama champions. There is no doubt that Sonatas was among the top three bands that night -- the other two being CASYM and ADLIB steel orchestra. However, it was surprising that Sonatas won by such a wide margin in a competition where many thought it was a toss up between the top three.Speaking with folks on the grounds of the museum Panorama night, many persons were picking any one of this big three to win -- each with their own specific reasons:"Sonatas had a better development of the piece.""CASYM got de fire.""ADLIB was crazy -- he mixed the DISNEY theme song in there!! CRAZY!!."These are some of the arguments I heard speaking with various persons I met that night. Personally, I felt CASYM was best that night -- but what do I know? The judges placed them third! Casym executed their passages with a clarity that sounded superior to Sonatas and ADLIB. I felt ADLIB was doing too much too often -- sometimes, less is more. Click here for full blog.
