My Brother, I wish to juggle your faculty a little. Whether you have intentionally or conveniently forgotten, be reminded the Hells Gate Steel Orchestra in October, 1993, withdrew its membership from the ABPA and I resigned from the position of President of the ABPA, as a result of the unethical behaviour of the MAJORTY of member bands of the ABPA. To date, almost twenty (20) years later, we maintain  the view that, “while MAJORITY might win, MAJORITY is not necessarily always right”.

Hells Gate Steel Orchestra re-established its membership with the ABPA subsequent to October 1993.

Prior to 2005, I was approached by a number of concerned individuals within the Pan fraternity, regarding serving as the President of the ABPA for a second time, because you as the substantive holder of that position was unable to continue in the position of President , owing to your involvement in Leeward Islands Cricket. I accepted the challenged on the conditionality that the ABPA and its membership would strive for the “greatest good for the greatest many”, and ensure that through our collective thinking and our collective efforts, the goals of the ABPA as established in 2001, would be achieved going forward. Again, the unethical behaviour of the same member bands along with some individuals within the ABPA , left me with no alternative but to resign in 2005.

There are currently some member bands and individuals within the ABPA who are displeased with the decorum of those at the helm of the ABPA, but are afraid to speak out. Hence, “the silence is deafening”.

We exist in a democracy in which your rights and mines are protected by Law. Your rights which are enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, are my rights too.

Being a member of an organization does not and should not preclude a person or a particular group from publicly disassociating himself/herself or a group from any unethical behaviour of the leadership or other members of that organization.

I can vividly recall when you approached me some two (2) years ago and informed me of the treatment meted out to you by the principals of Ebonites Steel Orchestra. You told me that you were the Drill Master for the said orchestra and was conducting a drilling exercise with the orchestra, when you were unceremoniously replace by an individual brought in from overseas.  As a Brother you had my shoulders to shed your tears, and my shoulders are still available, despite the fact I had to change my shirt twice. I personally investigated the matter and from the majority of persons with whom I spoke , the feedback I received was that , during the period in which you perform the task of Drill Master for Ebonites Steel Orchestra, the orchestra performed at a much higher level  and that you managed to instill an acceptable level of discipline in and around the panyard. I was also informed that your successor has failed to maintain or achieve the level of performance or discipline you left at Ebonites Steel Orchestra panyard. As a local musician and senior pannist, are you in agreement that the treatment meted to you by the principals of Ebonies Steel Orchestra, was ethical and justified?

My Brother, to the best of my knowledge, understanding and belief, “a good leader does not rely or presume on strength or power. He is not pleased by favour and does not fear vilification. He does not crave whatever material goods he sees; and he does not rape whatever women he can.  His only intention is to pursue the best interest of his country”.

You, more than anyone else would know that Stafford Joseph does not negotiate matters of principle. “Matters of principle are non- negotiable. Principle is either wholly kept or wholly sacrificed. The slightest concession on matters of principle would indicate the abandonment of principle itself”.

LIME Hells Gate Steel Orchestra, being fully aware of who we are and what we represent, cannot and will not agree to or condone anything that would bring our organization's name into ill repute.

Subject: 2013 National panorama Judges / Updates

Greetings

Members

I received yesterday, (10th July 2013), confirmation from Mr. Maurice Merchant that he has received from Pan Trinbago, the names of four (4) adijudicators, that they have chosen to adjudicate over Antigua's National Panorama 2013. Their individual biographies or cv's will be forth coming. Mr. Merchant also informed me that he is patiently waiting on the A.B.P.A, as to their recommendation on whom they want the local adjudicators to be for the 2013 National Panorama.

Therefore, i would appreciate if the members can suggest names for the local adjudicators, so that i can pass on the information to Mr. Merchant. Remember, members this is something that we had discuss at our meeting on 26th June. We need to identify our local adjudicators. Members, you can email me your recommendations.

Pan Vibes at the Antigua Commercial Bank on Thames Street has commenced.

Thanks

Antigua 2013 National Panorama 2013

Hells Gate, from the inception of the introduction of overseas arrangers and adjucators in our National Panorama, has always remained opposed to the idea. From my personal experience, Rising Sun Steel Orchestra and Hells Gate Steel Orchestra were always opposed to the idea, notwithstanding being in the minority.

We are of the view that Antigua's National Panorama is a national event and that ous nationals must be showcased and given the challenge and opportunity to advance thenmselves.

The fact that to date, the ABPA has failed to engage the local musicians in meaningful dialogue regarding any concerns the ABPA had with the 2012 Panorama results, which was adjudicated by all local  qualified and reputable musicians , but instead  have already secured four (4) overseas adjudicators and are yet to source three (3) local adjudicators to complete the panel of seven (7) adjudicators, in my view, this is not only disrespecful to the nation of Antigua and Barbuda but seems conspiratorial. Doesn't "charity begins at home anymore"?

We would  be the first to support the idea of overseas adjudicators  if Antigua was hosting a Caribbean or International Competition. However, this is not the case.

The majority of the ABPA leadership suffers from an inferiority complex, i.e., "anything that is not local is better".

To date, the ABPA leadership has not furnish the membership with the minutes of the meetings held regarding 2013 Panorama, indicating which member Band submitted the resolution to amend Rule 7 (h), who seconded the motion etc. and on what date did the amendment became effective. In fact, tha ABPA has failed to convene a General Meeting  or Elections over the past six (6) years.

We wish to register our dissatsifaction  regarding the ABPA handling of this issue and to assure Antigua and Barbuda, that on the evening of 1st August, 2013, LIME hells will represent our twin island nation with pride and dignity.

On Saturday July 6th, the pan fans at "Pan in the Countryside" at Speyside, Tobago were treated to a wide array of music from, The National Instrument of Trinidad and Tobago.  The show commenced after 4:pm with beautiful renditions from New Vision Steel Orchestra, of the Single Pan Category.  Next up was the Uptown Fascinators Steel Orchestra, of the Small Bands Category with arrangements from the up and coming pannist/ arranger, Leeandro Noray.  I was told that some of the young pannist just began playing the pan 3 weeks ago.  Next up was, Tobago Panthers, who moved up from the Single to Small Category.  Their renditions were done by Robert Tobitt, who inter travelled on weekends for three weeks.  The leaders of the first three Steel Orchestras all allowed respective members to display their soloing attributes, who handled them well.  We were next treated by Katzenjammers Steel Orchestra, of the Medium Category.  They caught the audience with the classical piece, "Air on a G String" which was arranged by Derrick Nurse, and continued awing the appreciated pan fans with their wide reperatoire.  The last to perform was Desperadoes, which gave the pan fans 10 of its standards and topped off with "Rebecca." The band's  reperatoire included arrangements from a junior player Nathaniel Flemming, and Ricky "Andre" Robley who placed 2nd at the St. Vincent Panorama behind Seion Gomez.  Desperadoes attempted to make a statement by commencing with "In My House," but the house also belonged to the other performers especially Katzenjammers.  Kudos to the familiar faces from the Trinidad and Tobago pan diaspora who were there.  We pan fans are looking forward to 2014. Love, Peace and Pan

CDC Accepts Proposed Panorama Judging Rules Amendment

  • Friday, 05 July 2013 02:04
  • Written by  Staff Reporter

Carnival Beat, Carnival 2013, Carnival, Panorama, CDC, Steel Pan,

What was initially thought to be a proposal still up for discussion within the Pan fraternity, has recently been realized to be an enforceable document already sanctioned by select parties.

Spokesman of the LIME Hells Gate Steel Orchestra Stafford Joseph said on Thursday that his understanding of the situation of amendments to the Panorama judging rules was clearly off par with a decision on the subject being taken in the absence of the Hells Gate group, among others.

“I thought that Patrick 'Stone' Johnson in a previous e-mail, clearly stated that the proposals were still in the discussion stage at the ABPA level. When did he indicate that a consensus was arrived at the level of the ABPA?” Joseph questioned.

He added that such a move by the ABPA President was clearly designed to deceive those in the Pan fraternity.

Via email, Johnson informed the Pan fraternity on Thursday that "after the discussion with both parties, the CDC has decided to accept the proposed amendment to Rule 7 Adjudication as stated in the proposal".

To this end, Stafford Joseph now questions the ethical standings of the ABPA President’s move.

“Is it ethical for Patrick 'Stone' Johnson, acting President of ABPA and arranger for WIOC Gemonites Steel Orchestra, Dwayne Mussington, a principal of Digicel Halcyon Steel Orchestra and Cuthbert Thomas, a principal of the Cool and Smooth Ebonites Steel Orchestra, being fully aware that their respective orchestra are expected to participate in the National 2013 Panorama, to proceed with the undertaking that is placed in their laps by the ACDC, as indicated in the e-mail communication of 4th July,2013?” he asked.

Further to that, he pondered the current derisory financial standings of the ABPA and how it proposed to accommodate four overseas adjudicators, having to pay for airfare, accommodations and a stipend of USD$500.00 each.

“I would be obliged if the principals of the ABPA would provide a dollar figure of the total cost for the four overseas adjudicators and inform the pan fraternity and the general public the level of financial relief that amount would bring to member bands who are participating in the 2013 National Panorama. Is this not our National Panorama?” Joseph said

Dear members, i received a call from an observer radio staff.... stating that they have a document from Lime Hells Gate Steel Steel Orchestra pertaining to our

amendment of Rule 7.....now this amendment had been discussed by members in the past and a draft copy sent to members for discussion purposes and feed back.

I told the lady, of which i did not request her name, from Observer, that this matter is still being discussed and wish not to make any comment on this matter, and it is an internal matter that is to be solved internally and is still being discussed.

Please note members, that this rule amendment has been sent out to members first, for feed back and suggestions.I then discussed with other members as to the next step and it was agreed to send this portion of the rules to Mr. Maurice Merchant of CDC.. as a proposal for discussion and to meet with CDC as to the way forward, when it comes to adjudication at our national panorama.

Thus, that is where we are at

Let me say that every member has had the opportunity to voice the opinion on the matter of Rule 7 Adjudication in the past and we need to settle this matter internally, soonest.

Colleague,

We acknowledge receipt of the ABPA update re - proposed amendment to
National Panorama Rules for the 2013 National Panorama scheduled for
1st August, 2013.

LIME Hells Gate Steel Orchestra is of the opinion that ABPA proposed
amendment is clearly a sign of retrogression on the part of the ABPA.
We are also fully aware that as individuals or organizations, we do have
the right to choose whether or not we progress or retrogress and
certainly, the LIME Hells Gate Steel Orchestra will not stand in the
way of any individual or organization that chooses retrogression over
progression or who continues to stand in someone else's shadow in
preference of their own.

To this end, and in an effort to salvage what little pride we have as
nationals of Antigua and Barbuda in regards to valuing, respecting,
preserving and growing our local talents, the LIME Hells Gate Steel
Orchestra, submits the attached response to the ABPA's proposed
amendment.

Regards,

Stafford Joseph

Suggested Amendment to rule 7 (A) & (H)

(A) Composition of the adjudicating panel for panorama:- A panel of seven (7) judges will be selected to adjudicate the Antigua and Barbuda Panorama competition; two (2) judges shall serve as alternates, to substitute for one (1) or more of the five (5) judges, if necessary. This determination is to be made by the Chairperson of the Judges Committee of the ACDC.

The panel of adjudicators shall comprise the following: Four (4) overseas judges and three (3) local judges whereby one (1) of the local judges shall serve as an alternate judge and one (1) of the overseas judges shall serve as the remaining alternate.

At all times, where it is necessary to do so, a local judge should be replaced by the local alternate and an overseas judge should be replaced by the overseas alternate.

(B) Procurement of judges: - With respect to the procurement of judges mentioned in A, the ACDC is responsible for sourcing all suitable overseas judges in consultation with Pan Trinbago. With respect to local judges, the ACDC is responsible for sourcing all suitable local judges in consultation with the ABPSA.

The A.C.D.C is responsible for expenses of the adjudicators and to furnish the A.B.P.A. the name and profile (resume) of the adjudicators no later than twenty days before the day of the panorama competition.

Please note the h in the heading is referred to as b in the reference of the amendment.

Yours in Pan Music

Patrick "Stone" Johnson

LIME Hells Gate Steel Orchestra would be obliged if the ABPA would fully explain the rationale for the proposed amendment (indicated in red) to the existing National Panorama Rules. Clearly, we are yet to be notified as to what preliminary effort was or is been made to source all local Adjudicators. Additionally, should a “genuine need” arise which necessitates the sourcing of overseas Adjudicators, LIME Hells Gate Steel Orchestra would agree to a panel comprising of seven (7) Adjudicators, with one (1) local adjudicator serving as an alternate to the local adjudicators and one (1) overseas adjudicator serving as an alternate to the other overseas adjudicator. Five (5) local qualified and reputable adjudicators sourced and agreed upon by the ABPA and the ACDC; and two (2) qualified and reputable overseas adjudicators sourced in consultation with Pan Trinbago and approved by the ABPA and the ACDC. A brief bio of ALL seven (7) selected and approved adjudicators must be submitted to the captains of ALL the participating Steel Orchestras, at least twenty (20) working days before the scheduled date of the 2013 National Panorama].

We would be obliged if the ABPA could explain the rationale for submitting the proposals to the ACDC, before the membership of the ABPA had arrived at a consensus on the proposed amendments.

Condolences to the Gittens Family.

Robert Gittens died on Thursday 13th June, 2013. Robert was a Casablanca from young. he and his brothers Valmond and Michael. Although in his youthful days he left the hill and went and took a knock with BWIA Sunjets, (which was unheard of in those days), It was back up the hill to try and assist Casablanca in whatever way possible. He also played football in the MERVINA's league.

May God bless his soul.

Thank you Pan Trinbago

The Codrington Pan Family would like to express sincere appreciation and gratitude to the executive of Pan Trinbago for their professional handling of the Tobago pan jazz event―Pazzaz.

From the beginning to end, all of our arrangements were spot on; travel, accommodation, meals, etc. The effort was also made for constant communication to ensure that all of our needs were taken care of. We would also like to offer thanks to the Sound technician staff for their cooperation. It was evident of their efforts to make sure that all of the artists were comfortable with their sound.

We think that all of the arrangements were consistent with the prerequisites of hosting an international event. Had the weather been favourable it would have been a memorable show.

Thank you Pan Trinbago, we are proud of your efforts.

Yours in pan,

Codrington Pan Family.

Here is a review that somebody wrote up about the first annual Great Lakes Steelpan Festival.

Steel would Pan out nicely wouldn’t it?
Raff Stapp

Festivals have always been around. Whether you are part of the star-trek society at college or the lead singer in an infamous hip hop band from New York, you will find a festival which suits your needs. However, when the issue of steelpan education in the Chicagoland area was concerned there was no answer; that is until the Great Lakes Steelpan Festival.

The Great Lakes Steelpan Festival is definitely a one-of-a-kind festival and on April the 13th, this became a solidified fact. Yes, there are many more which take place around the world however not many can boast names such as Gary Gibson, Dr. Ellie Mannette and Clyde”Lightning” George. Yes, a doctor indeed! We will explain who these people are later on in the article.

Education through the medium of enjoyment and entertainment was on the agenda when this enthralling event took place in Crystal Lake. It provided the people around the area of Chicagoland an opportunity to educate themselves on the Steelpan, its roots and how much of a vibrant ruckus these instruments can actually cause. The simple fact that these artists shared the same stage is a colossal achievement in itself!

The Potts & Pans Steelband, owned by Matt Potts, are known for their work in the surrounding area. They are educators of the instrument and were there to distribute both their theoretical and practical knowledge to all attendees. Their Midwest premier performance of Andy Akiho’s ‘Alloy’ took the crowd of 200 by storm with some feedback describing the performance as ‘absolutely mind-blowing’. This was undoubtedly one of the greatest highlights of the festival. However, more was to come…

The fact that the Steelpan in itself is a very young instrument, the idea of it being so versatile with its creation and its utilisation is what drew in the crowds. It had an educational focus and was the first to take place in Northern Illinois – for a first time festival; it did not do too badly at all.

In addition to the evening concert there were educational workshops running, which is unique to this festival alone. Dr. Ellie Mannette ran workshops which explained how his innovative skills allowed him to create the instrument. The attendees were glued to the advice and stories which Dr. Mannette had to share as he explained his involvement and the evolution of the instrument to what it is today. People would later talk of how it was phenomenal to physically meet such a personality. Alongside Dr. Mannette, Clyde “Lightning” George provided workshops where he shared his approach on playing Jazz on the Steelpan. It may seem like a far outcry to be playing jazz on such an instrument but this is what made the festival as magical as it was memorable. The creative flair which was surrounding the festival took everyone by storm, and when a performer is nicknamed “Lightning”, you know you are in for a world of entertainment!

As the sun began to bid farewell and the evening drew in, the festival came into its prime. All the featured guests performed unparallel pieces and compositions. Amongst many enthralling performances, one which will stick in people’s minds for years to come was the Potts and Pans performance, and Midwest premier, of Andy Akiho’s ‘Alloy’. The reaction which this conduction received is beyond words.

However, this was not the only attraction of the night. Ellie Mannette would practice what he had preached earlier on in the day and would display what can only be described as stunning. After discussing the struggles he underwent to create the different voices of this instrument, it was time to hear these different voices. Dr. Mannette did not disappoint. His performance beautifully combined together the contemporariness of today with the Trinidadian roots of the Steelpan itself. Clyde “Lightning” George would watch with nothing short of humongous respect for Mannette as he played away an original composition of his. ‘I had no idea the Steelpan could be played in so many different ways’ is what a member of the crowd told us.

Finally, to place the cherry on the cake, the Potts and Pans Steelband accompanied the world renowned Gary Gibson (composer and educator of the instrument) and Clyde “Lightning” George to perform pieces which the crowd will talk about for years to come. These renditions, compositions and performances saw people draw out their phones, already pencilling in the date for next year’s festival. This festival was definitely a unique and informative outlook towards the Steelpan itself, the history behind it, and how it has evolved to become what it has. When Gibson, George and the band carried out their collaborative efforts, one was clearly able to recognise the sentimental value of the steelpan.

If you are to imagine a lot of noise, from both instruments and the crowds of people, then mould the noise of the instruments into a melodic routine which one can relate to, then as a result put a smile on everyone’s faces – you will come to a conclusion which screams ‘The Great Lakes Steelpan Festival’. The crowds thoroughly enjoyed the event and gained invaluable knowledge with regards to the instruments themselves. It was a beautiful and brilliant festival which the Midwest region was asking for and hopefully within the near future, Crystal Lake, IL will be come to known as the steelpan hub for the entire region!

There are some errors in there, but for an outsider with no previous knowledge of the steelpan this was great to see!

Pan Trinbago ELECTIONS

Now that the carnival is over, could anyone say when will be the election of officers for the Central Executive of Pan Trinbago.  I heard from a reliable source that PTB has appealed the decision of the court, in the two matters they lost.  Is it that the current executive  is prolonging their stay at the top with a lot of unnecessary legal fees, and are just making attorneys 'RICH' at the expense of panmen/women? Is it true that in one instance where they withdrew the matter with Mr. Keith Simpson and he won that matter out right, they are now appealing that same matter?

Could some one in the know please advise??
